Perith Nursery, Cumbria

We are a 47 place purpose built nursery, set in a lovely residential area of the historic Cumbrian market town of Penrith. Our nursery is a busy and lively environment where children are very well cared for in surroundings in which they are encouraged to learn and explore through a "hands on" play based environment. Our last Ofsted (Jan 2010) was good with two outstanding areas.

All staff are thoroughly dedicated to ensuring all our children's well being and safety, they are trained to a very high standard and are continuously renewing their in house training on a rolling programme. We provide a home from home nursery with a family feel – our cook Helen makes the children's meals on the premises often using the vegetables and fruits that the children have grown themselves in our nursery garden. The emphasis is very much on healthy eating and sharing meals times with our friends – making them social and learning occasion.

The outdoors is an integral part of our nursery life and children have access to the mature gardens on a free-flow basis. They use the outdoors to ride, climb, build, draw, share stories as well as to investigate the natural world. We plan regular daily and weekly activities for the children to share in based on their own individual interests. Children are very much seen as individuals here at Safehands and we warmly welcome all children celebrating diversity of every kind.

It is very important for children that we learn as much about them as is possible and so we do this by talking to you as parents and carers, asking you to write comments in your child's "home/ nursery" book and share with us their life outside of nursery so we can make your child's day and all activities on offer as interesting and relevant to them as possible. We have very good links with other agencies and professionals such as children's services, health visitors, advisory teachers and speech therapists. We offer regular trips to such places as Whinlatter Forest, the Theatre, Tullie House, The Pirates, The Library, The Park and many more. We offer settling visits for your child to help them get to know us and us them in the weeks leading up to their starting at nursery, parents are welcome to stay for the initial visits.

All of our children are allocated a "key person" – that is their special person who will build a good strong bond with your child and his/her family. Although all of the staff will be involved in the care of your child. We firmly believe that all of our children enjoy coming to nursery and really thrive during their time here with us.
